Leadership Practices Inventory Assessment (LPI)

Leadership is not about personality; it’s about behavior—an observable set of skills and abilities. When the co-authors of The Leadership Challenge, Jim Kouzes, and Barry Posner, first set out to discover what effective leaders do when they’re at their personal best, they collected thousands of stories from ordinary people—the moments they recalled when asked to think of a peak leadership experience. Despite cultural differences, gender, age, and other variables, these “personal best” stories revealed similar behavior patterns. The authors discovered that when leaders experience their personal best, they display five core practices: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. Jim and Barry called these behaviors The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®. Together, these practices provide the basis for the Leadership Practices Inventory Assessment (LPI).

THE FIVE PRACTICES OF EXEMPLARY LEADERSHIP ®

Effective leadership involves a set of principles and behaviors that inspire and guide individuals toward achieving shared goals. The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, as presented in Wiley Publishing's Leadership Challenge Workshop, provide a comprehensive framework for leaders to cultivate their skills and make a lasting impact. Let's delve into each practice and explore the principles leaders must exhibit within each one. The LPI assesses leadership behaviors in five key areas known as the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership:

  1. model the way

Leaders establish principles concerning how people (constituents, peers, colleagues, and customers alike) should be treated and how they should pursue goals. Leaders create standards of excellence and set an example for others to follow. They put up signposts when people feel they need help figuring out where to go or how to get there. Leaders create opportunities for victory. Modeling the Way is about leading by example and setting high standards of behavior and performance. It involves demonstrating integrity, authenticity, and consistency in actions and words. Leaders must clarify their values and ensure they align with the organization's mission. By adhering to their values and principles, leaders establish credibility and gain the trust and respect of their followers. They must communicate expectations clearly and be accountable for their actions, thus inspiring others to emulate their behavior.

  2. inspire a shared vision

Leaders passionately believe they can make a difference. They envision the future and create an ideal and unique image of what the organization can become. Through their magnetism and persuasion, leaders enlist others in their dreams. They breathe life into their visions and get people to see exciting possibilities for the future. Leadership is about painting a compelling picture of the future and inspiring others to pursue that vision. To inspire a shared vision, leaders must articulate a clear and inspiring vision that resonates with the aspirations of their team or organization. They must communicate this vision effectively, leveraging storytelling and other persuasive techniques to engage and motivate others. Leaders should foster a sense of purpose and create an environment where individuals feel connected to the larger mission, igniting their passion and commitment.

  3. Challenge the Process

Leadership involves challenging the status quo and seeking continuous improvement. Leaders must encourage innovation, creativity, and risk-taking within their teams and organizations. They should question existing processes, seek new approaches, and empower their followers to contribute their ideas and insights. By embracing change and learning from successes and failures, leaders create an environment of growth and adaptability. They must also support and recognize the efforts of individuals who courageously challenge the process.

  4. Enable Others to Act

Leaders encourage collaboration and build spirited teams. They actively involve others. Leaders understand that mutual respect sustains extraordinary efforts. They strive to create an atmosphere of trust and human dignity. They strengthen others, making each person feel capable and powerful. Leadership is not a solitary endeavor but a collective effort. Leaders must support collaboration, empower their team members, and create opportunities for others to excel. They should build strong relationships based on trust and respect, actively listen to the ideas and concerns of others, and provide the necessary resources and support for success. Effective leaders delegate authority, encourage autonomy, and foster a culture of accountability. By enabling others to act, leaders tap into the collective potential of their team, fostering growth and achieving extraordinary results.

  5. Encourage the Heart

Accomplishing extraordinary things in organizations is hard work. To keep hope and determination alive, leaders recognize individuals’ contributions. In every winning team, the members need to share in the rewards of their efforts, so leaders celebrate accomplishments. They make people feel like heroes. Leaders must recognize and celebrate the contributions of their team members. Encouraging the heart involves expressing appreciation, providing recognition, and celebrating milestones and achievements. Leaders should create a positive and supportive environment where individuals feel valued and acknowledged for their efforts. By showing genuine care and empathy, leaders build strong relationships and foster a sense of belonging and loyalty within their teams. Encouraging the heart inspires individuals to give their best and fosters a culture of camaraderie and shared success.

The LPI assessment provides leaders with valuable feedback on their leadership behaviors and helps them identify areas for improvement. It is often used as a self-assessment tool and a 360-degree assessment where feedback is gathered from colleagues, direct reports, and superiors.

By completing the LPI assessment, leaders gain a deeper understanding of their strengths and areas for development in each of the five practices. This knowledge allows them to create targeted development plans and enhance their leadership effectiveness.

In summary, Wiley Publishing's Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) is a comprehensive assessment tool that measures leadership behaviors based on the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership. It gives leaders valuable insights to enhance their leadership skills, inspire others, and drive positive change within their organizations.
