Wellclusion: Embracing Wellness Through Inclusion

by David Robert

In today’s fast-paced world, wellness is often reduced to a checklist: eat healthy, exercise regularly, get enough sleep, meditate. While these are undoubtedly important components, true wellness encompasses much more. Wellness is a holistic concept that includes mental, emotional, and social wellbeing. One of the most crucial, yet sometimes overlooked, aspects of this comprehensive wellness approach is Inclusion.

Inclusion refers to creating environments in which any individual or group can be and feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued. It’s about ensuring that diverse individuals have equal opportunities to contribute to and influence every part and level of an organization, community, or society. Let’s delve into how inclusion and wellness are interlinked and why fostering an inclusive environment is essential for holistic health.

The interconnectivity between wellness and inclusion is so important, we felt it deserved its own name so we coined the term “wellclusion.”

The Psychological Benefits of Inclusion

Feeling included has profound psychological benefits. Humans are inherently social creatures; we thrive on connection and belonging. When individuals feel included, they experience a sense of acceptance and validation, which significantly boosts mental health. This sense of belonging can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while enhancing self-esteem and overall happiness.

In contrast, exclusion or discrimination can lead to feelings of isolation, low self-worth, and mental health issues. Inclusive practices, such as recognizing and celebrating diversity, providing equal opportunities, and promoting a culture of respect, can mitigate these negative effects and foster a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

Physical Health and Inclusion

The connection between mental and physical health is well-documented. Stress and anxiety can manifest physically, leading to conditions like hypertension, weakened immune response, and chronic pain. When people feel included and valued, their stress levels decrease, which positively impacts physical health. For instance, inclusive workplaces where employees feel supported can lead to lower absenteeism, higher productivity, and improved overall health.

Social Wellbeing and Community

Inclusion strengthens communities by building trust and collaboration among diverse groups. When individuals from different backgrounds and abilities feel included, they are more likely to participate in community activities, volunteer, and engage in civic responsibilities. This active participation fosters a sense of community, enhancing social wellbeing and creating a more connected and resilient society.

Furthermore, inclusive communities benefit from a diverse range of perspectives and ideas, which can lead to innovative solutions to common problems. This collective intelligence contributes to the wellbeing of the entire community, ensuring that everyone’s needs are considered and addressed.

Practical Steps to Foster Inclusion

To truly integrate inclusion into wellness, consider the following practical steps:

  • Education and Training: Provide education and training on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to create awareness and understanding among all members of an organization.

  • Policy Development: Develop and implement policies that promote inclusion, such as anti-discrimination policies, flexible working arrangements, and support for underrepresented groups.

  • Leadership Commitment: Ensure that leaders are committed to inclusion and demonstrate this through their actions and decisions. Inclusive leadership sets the tone for the entire organization.

  • Regular Assessment: Regularly assess and evaluate the inclusivity of wellness programs and initiatives. Seek feedback from participants and make necessary adjustments to improve inclusivity.

Wellness and inclusion are intrinsically linked; one cannot be truly achieved without the other. By fostering inclusive environments, we promote mental, emotional, and social wellbeing, which in turn enhances overall health. As Loeb Leadership strive for a healthier workplaces, it is imperative to recognize and embrace the power of wellclusion. Through intentional actions and commitment to inclusive practices, we can create workplaces where everyone can thrive.
