Meet Gary Bagley

Gary is an executive coach and consultant with over 25 years of organizational and program leadership experience and a strong commitment to equity & inclusion, leadership development, and community building. He also teaches leadership, management, and strategy to MPA students at Columbia University and Baruch College.

Gary contributed his vision and leadership to building New York Cares into one of the leading nonprofit organizations in New York City, serving over eight hundred nonprofits and schools with education, hunger, and public spaces programming. As a result of his strategic, fundraising, and scaling expertise, New York Cares tripled its service delivery – executing more than 20,000 projects and filling 150,000 volunteer positions annually. In the face of COVID-19, Gary led New York Cares in expanding its hunger programming fifteen-fold and launching a phone banking system to make over 80,000 tech support calls to students in transitional housing as well as wellness checks to isolated seniors and veterans. Gary’s passion for equity helped him transform New York Cares into an antiracist organization, a true reflection of the multicultural society within which it operates.

Gary's leadership has been recognized by The New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Award for Overall Management Excellence, and the Peter F. Drucker Award for Nonprofit Innovation. Gary was named a Notable in Nonprofits and Philanthropy by Crain’s New York and one of the CSR Responsible 100 by City & State.

Gary co-authored the "Volunteer Engagement and Management" chapter in “Nonprofit Management 101.” Gary is an appointee to the New York State Commission on National and Community Service and serves on the Board of Directors of the National Urban Fellows as well as Nonprofit New York.

Gary helps leaders and their teams perform more effectively while finding greater purpose in their work. He supports teams in improving their collaboration, decision-making, and performance by developing structures and practices that help them to better achieve the organization’s mission. Gary has also provided a wide range of consulting services, such as strategic planning, succession planning, and board coaching and development.
